Chayton stood there, the moonlight caressing his finely sculpted features, highlighting his handsome head and illuminating his eyes. He was troubled: he hadn’t expected the whites to launch a counter attack against his forces. The men within the town were getting bolder and the fire sticks they had left behind had claimed several of his braves. The whites had also managed to kill the Lakota chief, Little Tree. They had shot from the concealment of the night, using a weapon with incredible range and Chayton was aware that such a weapon would prove dangerous. From now on they would have constantly to be on their guard, would have to consider the possibility that the whites could have a man out there, concealed anywhere on the boulder-strewn terrain, with a rifle that could bring sudden death from incredible distances.

He knew the army reinforcements would be racing towards the town of Red Rock. He wondered if the men he had sent out had met with the army yet. Wondered how the battle had gone. Had the small force he had sent out been triumphant or had the white man’s army bested them? There was no way of knowing and the Indian was wise enough to realize that his warriors had to take the town as soon as possible, before any white reinforcements arrived and helped turn the tables in favour of the town.

He stood there for some time, listening to the sounds of the night before turning on his heel and heading back to the main camp. Soon it would be a good time to die: the Indian chief was ready if death was indeed intended for him. His vision, though, had told him he would survive, that he would live to see the day when his people would once again prosper and live in a land free of the white invaders.
